Geology and Mining In Society Merit Badge
Event Registration opens on May 20, 2026
This event is available to all properly registered youth members in South Florida Councils–
Troops, Venture Crews or Scouts BSA Lone Scouts to be approved to attend. This is not a Cub Scout Program.

This program is being offered and presented by our great Community Partners at CEMEX
ONLY four (4) Scouts from the same UNIT may register for this limited opportunity. See below-any Scouts over four per Unit will not be accepted and their paid registration will be voided and funds returned.
This event will fill up fast and it will sell out fast. We hope to have another event later in the next school year. That date is not yet set. All Scouts BSA youth participants must be properly registered as members in South Florida Council to attend
When: July 29, 2026 Wednesday IN PERSON
Where: CEMEX- South Florida Mine and Quarry- ALL Scouts are dropped off and picked up in West Hialeah and MUST travel together by bus to the mine-quarry and back.
Scouts will meet with Registered Merit Badge Counselor(s)– and will have a full tour of a working mine and quarry as well as the rock plant. Scouts will possibly also work with: The CEMEX Plant and Mine Manager, CEMEX Mine Safety Manager, CEMEX Geologist, CEMEX Environmental & Conservation Director, Quarry Manager, CEMEX Public Educational Director and/or Public Relations Director.
Depending on many factors we hope to have the Scouts witness a controlled dynamite blast at the limestone quarry during our event -at a safe distance
ALL Scouts will meet offsite and MUST all travel together by a bus to and from the CEMEX Quarry due to the security required. Parents may not transport their Scout to or back from the quarry.
No exceptions are permitted to this policy. After the program they will return to the same drop off location to be picked up by their parents. Location will be e-mailed to all approved participants.
(Drop Off Location is near I-75 and NW 138th Street).
Time: 8 AM Drop Off – 3:20 PM Pick Up (approx. time)
Scouts arriving late-– WILL NOT ATTEND– No refunds are given for missed opportunities. Scouts may not be driven to the quarry by parents and may not be driven later if running late. All Scouts will meet and ride together on the shuttle bus from the meeting location ONLY. Families MUST plan for traffic to arrive timely.

$30.00 Early Bird until June 15th – if space is still available- it will fill
Regular Registration after June 15th $ 40– if space is still available available
Last Day to Register for these merit badges is July 10, 2026, at 11 PM, OR when the class is full. It will fill quickly
Limited Seating is available for this exciting program – Only 40 total Scouts may register to attend.
ONCE FULL- No Wait List will be kept- you may watch for a future opportunity- Hopefully early October 2026
All Requirements for both Merit Badges are linked below for registered Scouts to familiarize themselves with before attending this program.
Attending these classes will not guarantee the completion of a merit badge unless all work is completed as shown in the requirements and and turned into the Merit Badge Counselor. Full completion for both merit badges is anticipated for fully attentive and participating Scouts.
This is not a program for Cub Scouts- All Scouts BSA youth participants must be properly registered as members in South Florida Council in Scouts BSA troops, Venture Crews or as Lone Scouts to attend.

If your registration is received after we have exceeded the limit of four Scouts from your Unit, your paid registration may be Voided and and funds will be returned to you. Discuss with your Unit families to coordinate. This allows us to offer this program to as many Scouts as possible from our multiple South Florida Council troops.
Scouts must attend in their Scout Field Uniform (No exceptions) – Lunch will be provided- Typically it will be a selection of boxed- deli sandwich, chips/fruit, snack, drink (may vary).Scouts with dietary personal preference or food allergies- please plan to bring your own non perishable lunch if desired to eat instead- no discount is provided.

When dropping off your Scout we must see you and ensure you have given us correct emergency contact information before you leave. Scouts may carpool with a responsible adult with prior notification sent to to and from the drop off. Scouts will be returned to the same location when the course is over to be picked up by the parent or guardian. During the day Scouts will be at the CEMEX- Mine-Quarry in Medley with registered BSA Adult male and female Leadership Supervision at all times.
PARENTS AND SIBLINGS MAY NOT ATTEND or TAG ALONG- this is for pre Registered and approved Scouts only-
NOTE –THERE MAY BE A VERY LIMITED AMOUNT OF REGISTERED BSA ADULT LEADERS in BSA Uniform THAT WE MAY NEED TO ASSIST WITH SCOUTS during this merit badge day. Include your –Name, Unit, Gender, BSA ID Number, Position, Contact info— There will be no charge to thank you for your service to our Scouts at the event- Lunch and travel is included for adults if they become approved and pre confirmed to attend this event wearing their BSA Uniform.
